Canadian wildfire smoke moves into Midwest and Northeast
If you stepped outside today and thought your eyes were playing tricks on you, you aren’t alone. That familiar, eerie milky-gray cast has settled over the horizon, turning the afternoon sun into an eerie red disc.
Once again, Canadian wildfire smoke has crossed the border, blanketing massive swaths of the U.S. Midwest and Northeast in a thick layer of fine particulate haze.

The Source: What's Fueling the Smoke?
Unlike the massive Quebec fires that turned New York City a Martian shade of orange back in June of 2023, this current wave of smoke is largely coming from a different culprit: Northwestern Ontario and Northern Minnesota.
A cluster of over 100 active wildfires is currently raging across Western Ontario—including a massive, out-of-control blaze near Wabakimi Provincial Park that has already scorched over 130,000 acres.
Combined with an intense summer heat dome, stagnant air, and steering winds out of the northwest, we have a literal "perfect storm" for sending heavy plumes of smoke straight down into the Great Lakes, the Ohio Valley, and the Atlantic seaboard.
Why Is the Air Quality So Bad Right Now?

1. Close Your Windows (Even at Night)
When it is cool in the evening, it is tempting to crack the windows to save on electricity. Don't do it right now.
2. Recirculate Your AC Air
If you are running central air conditioning or a window unit, look for the recirculate setting.
3. Mask Up If You Must Go Out
